In the second week of March, 2026, Oakland’s interim police chief James Beere announced that from now on officers who want to work unbudgeted overtime will have to get permission to do so. Very commendable. But think of this: until Beere’s order, for decades overtime spending by OPD has routinely blown past budgeted amounts as if they were simply advisory!
